Instrument 09 — The retrograde almanac

Mercury,
rewinding.

Three times a year the courier planet appears to walk backwards through the zodiac for three weeks — and the whole internet braces for impact. Here are the true windows, computed from Mercury's actual longitude rate, with the meaning separated from the myth.

The machinery

Mercury never moves backwards. Ever.

No planet reverses its orbit — the retrograde is a perspective trick. Earth and Mercury both circle the Sun; roughly three times a year our faster inner track overtakes Mercury's, and for a few weeks the courier appears to drift westward against the stars, the way a car you pass on the highway seems to slide backwards. The ephemeris sees through the illusion: this page computes the signed speed of Mercury's longitude and marks the exact moments it flips sign. The dates above are the real optical windows — not folklore, and not a rounding of somebody's printed table.

The use of it

A window for the re-verbs.

Astrologically, Mercury governs the plumbing of daily life: words, contracts, messages, commutes, code. When its motion reverses, those systems reward revision over initiation. The productive move is not to hide for three weeks — it is to schedule the re-verbs: reread the contract, resume the stalled conversation, repair the tool, return to the draft. Launch during a direct station; renegotiate during a retrograde. The sky is not against you in the window; it is simply asking you to proofread your life before you print it.

When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?

The exact windows are computed from Mercury's actual motion and listed in the table above — typically three per year, each about three weeks. Every date there is derived from the ephemeris itself, so it is right even where printed lists differ by a day: those lists round; this page bisects the true moment the planet's motion reverses.

What should you not do during Mercury retrograde?

Nothing is forbidden — the window simply favours re-verbs over first verbs: review, revise, reread, repair, reconnect. If you must sign or launch during a window, do the boring things twice: reread the contract, test the launch, back up the files. Retrograde punishes speed, not action.

How long does Mercury retrograde last?

About three to three and a half weeks, roughly every four months — so around eighteen to twenty-two weeks a year in total. Add the so-called shadow periods (the degrees Mercury re-traces before and after) and each episode stretches to nearly two months, which is why the window feels longer than it is.

Does Mercury retrograde affect everyone?

The optical retrograde happens for everyone on Earth at once — that part is astronomy. Astrologically, the people who feel it most sharply are those whose natal Mercury is roughly where the retrograde happens, or born during a retrograde themselves. Everyone else gets the background weather: slow emails, tangled plans, old friends reappearing.

Is Mercury retrograde real astronomy or a myth?

The astronomy is real: Mercury never reverses — from Earth it only appears to, when we overtake it on the inside track, the same way a car you pass seems to slide backwards. The interpretation is astrology. Alfalaki keeps the two honest: the dates are computed, the meaning is labelled as meaning.

Retrograde is weather,
not a verdict.
