Mercury Retrograde, Without the Panic
Three times a year, Mercury appears to move backwards — and the internet declares an emergency. Here is what is actually happening, and what retrograde can and cannot explain.
01
It is an illusion — and that is the point
Mercury never reverses course. Retrograde is a perspective effect: Earth, also moving, overtakes Mercury the way a faster car makes a slower one appear to slide backwards. Ancient astrologers knew this was apparent motion, and still charted it — because the symbolic pattern held across thousands of recorded cycles.
02
What retrograde is good for
The tradition assigns retrograde periods to review, revision, and return: contracts re-read, messages re-sent, old friends re-appearing. Not a curse — a rhythm. The practical reading is simple: double-check the details you would normally skim, and expect second passes to be productive ones.
03
What it cannot do
Retrograde cannot explain your breakup, your flight delay, or your printer. Astrology at its best is a language of timing and tendency, not a blame engine. When a site tells you Mercury is why your week went badly, close the tab — or send it here, where the ephemeris is real and the claims are modest.
